It is best to begin any ESL lesson plan whether you are teaching children or adults with some kind of warm up exercise.
This gets everyone into the whole thinking in English mode. For children this could be a quick game or some kind. Perhaps a word association game.
I say blue and they say color. I say cat and they say dog. Just anything to wake them up. With adults maybe just asking them what they did that day.
